Tour a Village of Regional History

Discover the Shenandoah Heritage Village at Luray Caverns. This seven-acre complex provides a home for many endangered historic buildings, meticulously restored and furnished. The welcoming village integrates a small vineyard and cottage style gardens full of heirloom flowers, with beautiful mountain views.

Structures

Endangered historic buildings found a new life on the grounds of a former farm adjoining Luray Caverns. Two houses, a meeting house, a school, a barn, a blacksmith shop and other buildings were carefully restored or repurposed to bring a glimpse into a Shenandoah Valley community in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Collections

The Luray Valley Museum collection concentrates on the Shenandoah Valley. This unique collection ranges from pre-contact Native American history, First Frontier settlement, Colonial Iron Industry, Decorative Arts, Civil War and other subjects up to 1920.

Gardens and Vineyard

Surrounding the historic structures, walkways and stone walls, our informal gardens provide our visitors with a beautiful open space. There is always something new blooming during the growing season including many varieties of heirloom flowers. Our small but productive vineyard produces delicious Norton grapes which are used to make a Port style wine.

Gem Mining Sluice

In the 18th and 19th century  prospectors used sluices to find precious minerals. Mining for iron ore, copper and manganese was an industry in this area. Today this sluice mining station provides fun interactive history and geology lessons. And brings discoveries of gems, fossils, and minerals to kids and adults of all ages… pioneer style! Discover a truly good time!

Heartpine Café

The downstairs of the Burner Barn provides a welcoming place to get a delicious lunch, a refreshing drink or a taste of our regional wines, beer and hard ciders. Outdoor seating is available under a large, covered pergola overlooking a small vineyard and beautiful views.

Museum Gift Shop

A small gift shop but with a lot of heart. Here you can find history books, handmade items including pottery, an assortment of history and country themed gifts. The gem bags for the Gem Mining Sluice are sold here.
